Kerala Wildlife

Kerala Wildlife Kerala is a land of rich fauna and flora being home for many exotic, rare and endangered species. The wildlife sanctuaries provide refuge to different forms of wildlife and provide an opportunity to the visitors to see these rare creatures in their natural surroundings. There are many unique wild animals like Nilgiri Tahr, elephants, leopards, tigers, lion-tailed macaque, monkeys, civet cats, deer, Malabar giant squirrel etc can be seen on tours to Kerala.

Aralam Wildlife Sanctuary :
Aralam Wildlife Sanctuary is a haven for Elephants, sloth bear, sambar, mouse-deer etc. It is also rich in reptiles and avifauna. This enchanting sanctuary can be easily accessed from the city of Kannur.

Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary :
Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary is located very close to Eravikulam National Park and Anamalai Wildlife Sanctuary in Tamil Nadu. It has a richer wildlife including some rare and exotic species. It is one of the prominent wildlife Sanctuary and a best known tourist destination of the state.

Eravikulam National Park :
Eravikulam National park is established specially for the protection and preservation of one of the most endangered animal, Nilgiri Tahr. The number of tahrs has increased drastically and this National park constitutes the largest known population of tahrs existing in the world. The park houses elephants, lion-tailed macaque, Nilgiri langur, sambars, gaurs, tigers and leopards in addition to tahr. Munnar is the nearest town to this National park which is connected to the major cities of the state by road.

Idukki Wildlife Sanctuary :
Idukki Wildlife sanctuary is spread over 70 km between the Periyar and Cheruthoni rivers. These rivers are the breeding place for various animals like elephants, wild boars, bear, bisons, sambar etc. The sanctuary is enclosed with lake on the three sides’ offering a panoramic view to the tourists.

Neyyar Wildlife Sanctuary :
The Neyyar reservoir extends 9.06 sq. km is located in the Tiruvananthapuram district of Kerala. The rich vegetations of Neyyar vary from tropical wet evergreen to grasslands. The prominent Agasthyakoodam hill lies in the premises of this sanctuary. It houses plenty of species like elephants, Nilgiri tahr, gaur, jungle cat; wild boar, sloth bear, Nilgiri langur etc. A deer farm, crocodile rearing centre and lion safari park are the main attractions of this destination.

Parambikulam Wildlife Sanctuary :
Parambikulam is a prominent wildlife sanctuary of the state located in the Palakkad district of Kerala. It has one of the largest populations of gaur (bison). The other inhabitants include Sambar, common otter, lion-tailed macaque, jungle cat, spotted deer, sloth bear etc. Few tigers and leopards are also spotted in this forest area. Forest rest houses are available at Thunacadavu, Thellikkal and Elathode for accommodation. Boat cruise and motor transportation are also available on request.

Peechi Vazhani Wildlife Sanctuary :
This sanctuary lies in the catchment areas of Peechi and Vazhani dams in Trichur District of Kerala. The headquarters of the sanctuary is located 15 km by road from Trichur.

Peppara Wildlife Sanctuary :
Peppara Sanctuary located on Thiruvananthapuram district is greatly accessible to the tourists. The sanctuary is rich in diverse fauna and birds, thus emerging as a big attraction to wildlife enthusiasts. Peppara Sanctuary is spread over an area of 53 Sq. km along the north east of Thiruvananthapuram. Animals like Elephant, leopard, sambar, and lion-tailed macaque are some of the commonly seen in this sanctuary.

Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary, Thekkady :
Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary is the most renowned destination of Kerala located at Thekkady. Apart from the Sanctuary, Thekkady also presents a tranquil countryside rich in plantations and thick jungles.

Silent Valley National Park :
The Silent Valley National Park is one of the very few unexplored tropical evergreen rain forests located in the Palakkad district of Kerala. This park offers a very soothing atmosphere with immense greenery of the Western Ghats. Plenty of animal species like elephants, tigers, wild dog, flying squirrel and lion-tailed macaque houses here. Vehicular traffic is allowed only up to a certain range after that one have to walk on foot to reach the source of river Kuntipuzha, which flows down the valley.

Thattekad Bird Sanctuary :
Thattekad Bird Sanctuary formed between the branches of the river Periyar covers a peninsular land of 25 sq. km. It houses plenty of avifauna which includes both resting indigenous birds and water birds. Malabar grey hornbill, heron, jungle myna, grey jungle fowl, egret, wood pecker, rose winged and blue winged parakeet are the most notable of the indigenous birds. Endangered birds like rose billed roller, Ceylon frog-mouth etc. can also be spotted here.
